The Project consists of a new 4750 square-foot VEREEN MEMORIAL GARDENS COMMUNITY CENTER located on Highway 179 in Little River, South Carolina. The building will have characteristics of a rustic, low-country design, including a covered screen porch on the rear side facing the gardens and wide overhangs to provide additional shade and covered work area, while being constructed with modern, low-maintenance materials. The exterior of the building will be constructed with decorative concrete block of varying textures, various stucco-type accent features, synthetic wood trimwork designed to stand up to the elements, a low-sloped roof with asphalt shingles that will give the feel of cedar shakes and impact-resistant doors and windows made to withstand the rigors of a hurricane.
The building will have a covered drop-off for the convenience of the senior patrons. The Community Center will also have two offices for staff, a full kitchen, a multi-purpose conference/activity room, and a large meeting space that can hold up to 204 people and can be divided into three separate meeting rooms by means of two retractable folding partitions. There is also a gardening room that is accessed from the outside of the building and a plant potting area with a workbench covered by a trellis. In addition to the restroom facilities on the inside of the building, there are facilities that can be accessed from the outside for the convenience of park patrons.
On March 12, 2008 the construction of the Community Center was completed. On May 1, 2008 there was a grand opening cermony and the new C.B. Berry Comminity and Historical Center at Vereen Memorial Gardens was opened to the public.
